So I wanted to build scenery, as usual, and I looked at my collection of TT Combat MDF buildings and decided I wanted to add a scratch built diner. A proper authentic looking US roadside diner type thing.

Before getting too far into the design, I thought I’d start with the rooftop diner sign, and of course it seemed like a perfect opportunity to try and 3D print something.

I started by sketching the image of what I wanted, a coffee cup with a 1950’s surf board style outline and a cursive Diner text. Nice and simple. And because this was a few weeks ago before I got to grips with blender, I recreated my image using Flash (my go to vector drawing tool), exported it to Sketchup, pratted about for hours tidying it before eventually getting an stl I could print.

This is my first attempt and I’m pretty happy. I printed it quickly so it’s low quality, but I’ll tidy it up with liquid greenstuff like I did with the Shadespire giant (that’ll get a post soon too). I think this 3D printing lark could work out ok!

Now just to build the diner. It’ll look a little something like this I think:

I’ve also been toying with the idea of led strip lighting around the top to get a retro looking red glow. We’ll see how that pans out.

The Scavengers get caught out in the open (again). It’s already looking bad for Liam, but he’s meeting the threat with his usual poise and grace

So the board is a simple piece of thin blue foam (mounted on foamboard for a little stability, but still light). Then I textured it to look somewhat similar to the real mat. Using various grades of sandpaper I edged the road, then went at it with a heavy scriber to add in cracks and damage. Finally my old staple of a rolled up piece of tin foil gave the whole thing texture. I even gouged the foam in places with the tin foil to make the road look a little more broken.

Next for strength, to keep the edges tidy and in one piece, I used tape around the edge. I was going to use gaffer tape, but the gorilla tape was cheaper. Wish I’d stuck with gaffer though, actually getting the tape off the roll was a pain. Hopefully that means it’ll keep the edges safe for a long time!

Finally for this update, here’s a group shot of the collection of barricades. Six of them to replace the standard card ones in the box, plus a couple of fences (made from plasterboard joining tape, cheers to the guy on leadadventure for the tip) for a little scatter terrain.

I’ve already started the painting, as soon as I have them all drybrushed I’ll get some pics before flocking the grass.

My core set is nearly painted up, I’ll get photos of that when they’re done. There are 18 28mm(ish) models in the set. Then I’ve started painting up a truck I got from the pound shop. I also have a couple of other bits and bobs kicking around.

And then I went to one of my favourite sites, TTCombat and bought this:

Isn’t it purdy? I also may have bought the Dinogas station, which will be getting assembled soon.

Oh and in fantastic news, our new house is nearly built and in three weeks or so I’ll have a hobby room again! Can’t wait to get all my kit out of storage and start creating again.

We’ve also played a couple of games of HeroClix and X Wing recently as well, so we’re riding that mini/board gaming wave thing that’s around at the moment.

Oh and I won the AOW game when Andrea got bitten, rose, and ate her sister. Nice narrative stuff coming out right from the get-go.
