Anywho rant over. They’re here now!

This is the box after I’d opened it up and ripped out the bubble wrap. Inside are all the goodies:

The core set, which is absolutely rammed with miniatures, and the expansion with some rather tasty figures. Didn’t go for expansion 1 in the end, though not sure I remember the reason now. Like I say it was a while ago.

Two hill giants. These will be the first painted, already assembled and primed as I type this. Mwuhaha.

A bag of bases, how considerate wasn’t expecting that. And now for the fun stuff:

Khanjira the World Breaker. Such a huge beastie.

Dragons Don’t Share! A massive dragon, a handful of adventurer types, and a massive amount of plastic for the watchtower.

All in all I’m stoked, such fun kit to play with. And I doubt I’ll need to buy any fantasy miniatures for a while. The quality is pretty damn good, a few issues on the smaller models (bent items, miscasts) but nothing major and the larger pieces are pristine.

I’m still trying to figure out how the roof will work, hence it being pinned in place. I think the building will separate into three sections in total, ground floor, first floor and attic in the gable. Then the two side sections of the roof will be boxed off. All a bit confusing at the moment to be honest. But it’s coming along.

Also started a little detailing, so there’s a fireplace in the kitchen and I’ve done the hearthstone in the main room. Can’t wait to get on with the actual detailing, putting on the timbers should bring it all to life.

But in a week or so I’m expecting my Reaper Bones kickstarter to arrive so it seemed like a good time to pick up the tools.

So a return to the Stadtheim Tavern! Random but diverting. Last I left the project it was going to be just a prop for the town, but now I’d like to do an interior. I took my knife the building and sliced it into pieces, then began reassembling it with a floor.

Then for fun I wanted to add a brick floor for the kitchen. I’d bought some brick slips many years ago with no real plan for them, seemed like a suitable outlet:

So I went off searching for models (see my post in the Articles section for where I sourced them) and ordered a load up. Today I painted up the first one, here’s the results:

I’m quite happy with the results, especially considering how quick it was to paint. Body in bronze flesh, boots in bonewhite, metals in gunmetal. Then I did the tattoos, enchanted blue mixed with bronze flesh. The pattern is a little haphazard but I suspect I’ll get better at it! Then devlan mud wash on skin and boots, badab black on the metals. Drybrush white on the fur and hair and a few highlights on the skin and tattoo and done.

Bases will all happen together once the warband is done. Already started painting up the next three barbarians. And actually enjoyed painting this one, the sculpt is old and simple, and hence a joy to paint. The tattoo was fun too, I think the arm is the most successful part so I’ll draw from that for the rest of them.

All my previous bases are made by Fenris, and whilst the quality is great they are getting quite expensive when you shop around, at £4.50 for 12.

So I did a little hunt on eBay and came up with a reasonable alternative. They’re from a seller called startledhedgehog and can be seen here.

As you can tell they’re a little larger at 30mm rather than 25mm, but for skirmish games like Mordheim I don’t think that’s an issue. Plus my barbarians I’m currently acquiring are likely to be quite hefy and will benefit from the greater space. They cost £2.50 for ten and I’m rather happy with the result. Simple things but I begrudge paying more for what is essentially the same product.

I’ve tried to design it in such a way I can get easy access to the interior, something I didn’t do so well on the other buildings.  Still need to sort out the small roof, currently there’s a large gap over the annex portion of the building.

I’m still going to see how the other dome looks, but this one should work fine.

I’ve started the main roof, as well as the support for the dome.

Still deciding whether to add a small sloped roof under the dome or not. Hard to describe but if I do it you’ll see! Easy that huh?

Oh and I’ve been messing about with the layout of the blog. Using one of the newer dynamic layouts. Means a couple of things are missing from the side, I might have the template to add them back. Though I’m also considering merging both my project blogs (this and KataanIV) into a single hobby blog, then I’ll have a platform for random editorial type articles too. We’ll see.

And I’ve started a new building to go in a new section. The layout has been juggled slightly to fit the available space, but I wanted to add this board to the end. I’m making an observatory to sit on a large hill.

It’s based on a model by Dave Andrews (isn’t all terrain? lol). I found it over on Felix’s website a while back:

Tell me that’s not an amazing model! Mine will of course be an approximation like all my stuff, I take someone’s idea and wander off on my own.

It’s being built using hirst arts blocks as with the rest of the town. Here’s a few in progress photos:

The tower is currently separate, I think I’ll leave it that way and have recesses in the base so it will slot into place or be detachable for storage.

The dome I’m currently pondering. I’ve ordered a housing for a home cctv camera from china that I think might do the job, though it might be a bit large. I actually think the dome on Dave’s model is a touch small, so mine will more or less fill the top of the tower. I did look at the top from Skullvane Manse, but without getting my hands on one I’m not sure if I like it.
