Still got loads of tiles to do (I’ve done 9 so far, just another 40odd to go then..) before I can do the inside, but at least I now have my basic space scene good to go. And it’s a handy game table for all the other board games I play. Nifty!

Until now! And would you believe it, it’s only the perfect size for the two small Stanley sortmasters I got in that bundle.

It even has a handy divider at the back for the manuals and the pesky long range ruler! Perfect.

The first sortmaster is filled with all the tokens, cards and dice needed (oh and I see why everyone says buy another starter kit, an extra set of movement templates and more dice would be great).

The other sortmaster, after much hacking of container, plastic ship boxes and polystyrene now holds my ships.

And the spaces at the front that currently holds the stands and pegs should be large enough for two small expansion ships. A shame because my next purchase I think will be a B-wing. I watched the final of last years worlds where two X-wing and two B-wing beat a tie swarm and it really sold me on them. 5 shields and they can barrel roll?

Anywho I digress, storage sorted, all that’s left to do is spray the underside of the ship holders black so it all looks a bit neater. In fact I might do that now.. woot, all done.

And I still have the huge sortmaster for when I end up buying a load more large expansions. I think with a bit of work it could even fit a Tantive IV or Rebel Transport. Isn’t that tempting?

Here’s what they look like:

The small one takes all the components except for the pesky range ruler. The large will take all the ships, though I’m going to have to modify the front two corner compartments to take a Falcon each. I’m going to get some eva or foam of some sort to build holders for the ships. I’ve seen some cool storage done using the plastic packs the ships come in, but not sure that will work here. We shall see.

Then on a forum someone mentioned The Works were selling off Revell Pocket Easy Kit things. So I went and had a look, and whilst several of the kits were no use, the Falcon kit was pretty close to size. It’s 1/241 instead of the FFG 1/270, but it’s pretty close. And since they were only a fiver a bought one. Brought it home, chopped it up a little, liked it, so went back and bought another three!

Here’s what I did with the first. A pretty standard central cockpit mod. And then I painted it in a vaguely Stellar Envoy pattern. Since FFG don’t sell spare bases for some reason I knocked one up, not subtle but it’ll suffice for now until a more stylish alternative presents itself.

And a comparison so you can see how much smaller it is:

I think the camera was tilted slightly, it’s only a cm or so in the real world. And since I won’t be doing any as a standard YT-1300 I think it’ll be just dandy.

But I’ve always had an eye on the X-Wing Miniatures Game since it came out. And since yesterday was my birthday what better time than to start a new hobby. I’m still waiting on Amazon to deliver, getting the core set and a couple of expansions to start with.

And then to tie into that I’ve been watching threads on various forums where people are turning pasting tables into small, portable games tables. It’s like it was fate huh?

So I bought a pasting table and have cut it down some (erm, a little too much, measure once, cut once, swear lots, right?), but it’s now reassembled and sanded. Ordered a carry handle and some toggle latches from ebay, they’re on route. I’ve got some blackboard paint downstairs that I’m going to use to give it a ‘space’ kinda look.

And then, because it’s me, I thought I’d go a bit more over the top and do something fun on the inside. So the outside of the case will be for star battles, the inside will be for space station style battles. I’ve braced the hardboard with the legs of the paste board, then filled the gaps with styrofoam I’ve been keeping for the past couple of years, and look at that it’s a perfect depth for the braces. Again, fate I’m tellin ya!

You know since it was a documentary I saw as a kid about the guys who built the Death Star that pretty much got me into this whole hobbying lark I suspect it was inevitable one day I’d be doing something similar. Only, you know on a smaller scale and not as good ;). But I’m hoping the overall affect will be awesome. I’ve done two of the tiles so far. Just another 62 to go then.

I’ve gone back and forth on the idea of casting them, but I think all materials will be too heavy. I contempated casting them in rubber too, but that would get bloody expensive. So I’m going to try and production line em. I’m going to do four identical ones later. These are all made with offcuts from my plasticard scrap box, so there’s very little effort. All the time it spent deciding what goes where, so doing multiples at once should speed things up. Wish me luck!
