Uploaded the new pictures of the turret. As I mentioned yesterday, I think it looks better being wider. Still need to detail it. The sides are going to be plated in the same fashion as the tops of the track units, rivets n'all. Should tie it together. Also going to put an eagle and some hinges on the new larger stowage box at the back. Quite happy with that, doesn't show in the pictures, but the back edge is rounded the same as the original ones.

The stance of the model is much better, apologies for the quality of the front on pic. Need to find a new bulb for my neon lamp, worked much better for photos.

First Update

After deliberation and input from WIP I've decided to go ahead and widen the turret. 3Guys linked me to Treadhead's stormhammer, where he simply split the russ turret and filled in the gaps. Looks great, so I'm going that for mine. No photos yet, but the basic work is all done and it's currently sat on the chassis looking pretty sweet. Lots of detailing work still to do, but very happy so far.

Still got a problem with the tracks though. Not sure where to go. I was reasonably happy with the ones I knocked up, but they were tricky to make, not inspiring me to finish them, and I've got comments suggesting they're not all that good! Perhaps a redesign is in order, unless I can come up with some suitably sized 1/35th tracks to save me the bother?

The main hull is complete and much of the structural work done. The outer sides need detailing, as does the rear end, but I'm happy with the shape and design. Not sure about the turret, the original plan was to make it much wider, but I quite like the way the original russ turret looks. Provides a nice visual link with the origins of the tank.

Project Overview

I was never all that happy with the design of the original Leman Russ. I think it’s a great model, but compared to real tanks it just looks a bit ungainly. More like a cube than the flat oblong shapes tanks seem to be.

Over on WIP Redshirt was talking about his redesign of a Russ, and mentioned something about the leman russ being a small baneblade. And that sparked something in my brain and I felt compelled to have a go.

And this project is the result. The centre unit is just a reversed leman russ hull (though repositioned and reshaped front and back to make it lower), with scratch built track units either side.

The whole tank was designed to look like a smaller baneblade, so that when they are sat alongside each other you should be able to see the resemblance.
