Right, this is pretty much done then. It's been a long time coming, but considering most of my projects never get painted I'm really happy.

I was trying to find a style which I could do quickly (and hence painlessly, to try and encourage me to paint a few), but still get reasonable results. I sprayed with my army's two main colours, red and sand. Then the red got a dark brown wash, the sand a lighter brown wash. I've never really got the hang of drybrushing large areas, always end up with streaks. What I did this time was drybrush with a slightly wet brush. Not sure if there's a name for it. It ended up as something of a cross between stippling and drybrushing, and I'm really happy with the effects. Especially so on the sand sections. I did this in snakebite leather, graveyard earth, then a proper drybrush in bleached bone to get the details. The red was done in dark flesh, then drybrushed in a dark flesh/blood red mix. Could do with going slightly brighter on the next tank I think.

All the metallic is flat aluminium tamiya paint. Quite like the finish of that. I tried to add a few chips and scratches where I thought they should be. Not sure if the result is good or not. The proper metal bits where then washed with shadow black (hands up who still has the original ink box? *raises hand*).

To finish off I did the tracks and the dozer blade with tamiya's weathering stuff. It's like makeup as far as I can tell, you use this little applicator jobbie. But I like the effect, and gives the tracks some depth.

Still need to add army markings, but I've not decided how I'm going to label my tanks, or indeed where the markings will go. I can do that later though.

So I'm calling this finished for now, and moving it to the completed projects page. Hurrah.

So I capitulated (good word for 11.30 on a saturday night, no?) and decided to use the new rhino. Obviously draws its inspiration from the cross breeds shown in WD a few months ago in George Dellapina’s army. But meh, I figured what the hell.

What I wanted was something that looked suitably ‘custom’ to sit along side the new leman russ variant I’m working on, whilst still retaining the inherent chimeraness.

This build has been a breath of fresh air, kit bashing amongst so much scratch building always is. This has gone together in about two days, and there are places where it looks a little rough because of it, but I was keen to test out the concept and see if I could figure out how to get it assembled. Turned out to be a right sod too.

So as it turns out, the rhino chassis and the chimera chassis weren't designed to be interchangeable. Who knew? Much hacksawing and swearing later I managed to get the two to mesh. I'd still like the chimera hull to sit higher, but it was starting to look a little odd down below.

Was tempted to make this either my command transport or my techpriest's transport, but decided to go for a bog standard approach first. Should inspire me to get the second one done that way.

Current plan is to finish off the details, patch up the holes from left and rear where the hull doesn't meet the tracks, then get it primered tomorrow, weather permitting.

One thing I do like is the use of the rhino hatches. The split hatch works really well with the rhino doors on the sides, and hopefully works to tie it all together. Least that's the plan.
